VIC Art Group

ART Group

History of the Veterans In Communities Art Group
The Art group meets on Tuesdays and Fridays at the VIC Centre in Haslingden. A craft group now runs every Monday morning at the VIC Centre where they are producing a variety of crafts that are being sold at craft fairs and community events and at our Accrington veterans drop-in shop . Once a month VIC hold a workshop where members can learn to pain in the style of Bob Ross.

The ages of those who have taken part since 2011 have ranged from 6 – 94 years of age. Many of those who have taken part have had very basic arts and crafts skills, the work produced has improved so much that their work has now been exhibited at the number of venues; including our first VIC exhibition at Alder Grange in 2011, Bury Millgate Shopping Centre in 2012 & 2013, The Army Arts Society annual exhibition at Salisbury in 2011, Rochdale Touchstone Art gallery in 2016, Bideford Veterans Art Exhibition, Castle Park Association of Wildlife Artists, and numerous community arts and crafts events around East Lancashire.

VIC provides informal workshops around arts and crafts using the different painting styles, using a range of different materials to produce a variety of crafts and  mediums to increase the knowledge and skills of participants.  Working in partnership we will use arts and crafts as a means to contributing to local communities and outreaching from the Centre thus attracting a wider membership who will gain benefit and advantage as existing members have done.

The VIC art group is now a well established form of relaxation therapy enjoying the full benefits at its permanent arts and crafts room in the VIC Centre in Haslingden.
VIC have been involved in a research project 'Stories in Transition' funded from the Arts and Humanities Research Council. Our art group was selected as our members have used art to help with their transition to Civilian life. The other two veteran organisations involved are 'Turn to Starboard' and Waterloo uncovered' The mural was completed by members of our art group. The research focused on three of our members in particular; Darren Horsnell, Steve Butterworth and Dave Joddrell. All three have used art to help with their mental well-being and, in their transition, back to civilian life.
